F3 - Tour 2 : LeBreton Flats: A Community in Evolution

New landmarks are taking shape at LeBreton Flats, a neighbourhood that has been in transition for decades. Ādisōke, the new central public library and federal archives building, and its neighbouring residential towers project, Odenak, are both nearing completion and bringing new life and energy to the area. This walking tour will explore Ādisōke and Odenak and describe the master planning framework for the neighbourhood that will emerge around them.

Laura Mueller
Chief of Development Implementation, National Capital Commission

Laura Mueller helps shape future communities as Chief of Development Implementation for the National Capital Commission, a Crown corporation that is the largest landowner in Canada’s Capital Region. Laura and her team support the process of seeking developers to construct new neighbourhoods and mixed-use developments on underutilized NCC land in some of the most iconic locations within Ottawa and Gatineau.

Laura’s previous role as Chief of Planning and Engagement for the NCC’s Building LeBreton project involved reinvigorating a plan and process to develop one of Canada’s most ambitious pedestrian-oriented sustainable mixed-use communities. Laura oversaw consultation and development of the 2021 LeBreton Flats Master Concept Plan, which will steer a multi-decade process to bring a vibrant transit-oriented community back to life at an underused site near the Ottawa River, a 10-minute walk from Parliament Hill.

Prior to the NCC, Laura was an advisor on planning, transportation, infrastructure and heritage matters for a municipal councillor at the City of Ottawa. Building on her past career as a journalist, Laura understands the importance of communicating and engaging people in the process of designing inclusive, sustainable, active-mobility focused communities. Laura is also chair of the organizing committee for Jane’s Walk Ottawa-Gatineau and remains involved in local urbanism events and groups.

Dan Gallivan

Senior Associate, Diamond Schmitt Architects

Since joining Diamond Schmitt in 2003, Dan has applied his design acumen and technical rigour to a range of projects across the firm’s portfolio. His experience spans Building Code and life safety analysis, planning, programming, schematic design, construction documentation and contract administration, giving him a comprehensive understanding of how design intent is carried through to built work.

Throughout his career, Dan has developed particular expertise in the design, coordination, and installation of architectural millwork, with experience across renovations, fit-outs, and new-build projects. He is an advocate for design approaches that connect material intelligence with constructability, together with sustainability and long-term performance, with a particular focus on low-carbon mass timber construction and digital fabrication technologies.

Dan is currently the project manager for Ādisōke, the 226,000-square-foot new Ottawa Central Library – Library and Archives Canada facility, as well as the 213,000-square-foot Cameron Community Centre and Library in Burnaby. Both projects feature mass timber construction and are designed to meet CaGBC Zero Carbon Standards. Other notable mass timber builds include the Trades and Technologies Renewal and Innovation Project at Lethbridge Polytechnic and Sam Centre for the Calgary Stampede Foundation.

Laszlo Mohacsi

Laszlo brings more than 25 years of experience in construction contract administration and project management. He has delivered complex, multimillion-dollar projects and led multidisciplinary consultant teams through both site- and office-based construction procurement. His experience encompasses Construction Management, Design-Build, Public-Private Partnership, Design-Bid-Build, and fixed lump-sum delivery models. His areas of expertise include construction document management, quality assurance, cost control and certification, construction and shop drawing submission tracking, activity coordination, and project scheduling.

An active contributor to the profession, Laszlo has served on several Ontario Association of Architects committees, including the Practice Committee, Construction and Contract Administration Resource Committee, Project Administration Resource Committee, and Project Resource Committee. Through this work, he has developed extensive knowledge of procurement methods and contract models, including Design-Build, Construction Management, and traditional stipulated-sum arrangements.

In his role as Lead Construction Contract Administrator, Laszlo has contributed to prominent projects such as the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Social Sciences, Carleton University’s Engineering Design Centre, and the Senate of Canada Building. He currently leads construction contract administration for Ādisōke, the joint facility that will house the new Ottawa Central Library and Library and Archives Canada.
