F3 - Tour 3 : Downtown Highlights

Travelling along Sparks Street to the ByWard Market, this walking tour will showcase notable urban design and public realm projects as well as the tactical installations and streetscape enhancements that are making an impact downtown.

Adrian van Wyk
MCIP, RPP
Program Manager, ByWard Market Redevelopment Office, City of Ottawa

Adrian is a Registered Professional Planner with the Ontario Professional Planners Institute and the Canadian Institute of Planners. He holds a Bachelor of Law degree from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and a Master of Planning degree from Queen’s University. During his career at the City of Ottawa, he has gained experience in the fields of heritage planning, urban design and development review. He currently serves as a Project Manager in the City’s newly created ByWard Market Redevelopment Office, helping to advance the revitalization of Ottawa’s historic ByWard Market district. His work focuses on streetscaping, placemaking and district liaison services, among many other varied responsibilities. The work of the Redevelopment Office is multi-disciplinary by nature and requires a high degree of collaboration, relationship-building and coordination – no two days are ever the same. Adrian’s work intersects with many other subject matters, including transportation, policy and accessibility. He is passionate about bringing together groups of people with diverse interests and building consensus around the common goal of building a better city for all.

Luis Juarez
MCIP, RPP
Planner III, ByWard Market Public Realm Office, City of Ottawa

Luis is a Registered Professional Planner and Member of the Canadian Institute of Planners with the City of Ottawa’s Strategic Projects Office. He focuses on the implementation of the ByWard Market Redevelopment Program, a coordinated initiative to transform key City-owned assets and public spaces in the heart of Ottawa’s historic ByWard Market district. His work brings together planning, urban design, mobility, infrastructure, partnerships and implementation strategy to advance the redevelopment of key municipal assets and the creation of new civic spaces. A graduate of the University of Waterloo’s School of Planning, Luis has previous experience in heritage conservation, development review and community planning. He is passionate about urban spaces and their ability to bring diverse people and ideas together.

Mary Ellen Wood
MCIP, RPP
Program Manager, Public Realm Urban Design Branch, City of Ottawa

Mary Ellen Wood, MCIP, RPP is a Program Manager for Public Realm Urban Design Branch at the City of Ottawa. With a background in planning, Mary Ellen has experience shaping inclusive, people-centered spaces that strengthen community life. Her project management skills have been demonstrated in delivering countless park projects, streetscape and civic spaces throughout the City. She is dedicated to creating meaningful public spaces with a balance in design quality, functionality and long-term community goals. With the Public Realm team Mary Ellen has the unique opportunity to bring thoughtful design, collaboration, and the belief that great places support healthy, thriving communities.
