What role for landscape architects ?
Quel rôle pour les architectes paysagistes ?
The recent crop of National Urban Design Awards suggests that landscape architects have established a significant presence on the Canadian urban design scene. It is therefore perplexing that the profession’s urban resilience agenda remains firmly confined to traditional, nature-centric spheres of disciplinary activity such as the design of green spaces, natural asset conservation, or urban forestry. But is this enough? And is not the profession at risk of finding itself pigeonholed in a narrow, supportive role within the broader urban design enterprise ?
This panel will tackle these questions from the perspective of three 2020 National Urban Design Awards recipients :

Each project will be used to explore the interface between landscape architecture and urban design by highlighting concerns, methods, and strategies that transcend disciplinary boundaries. In doing so they will attempt to delineate the contours of a broader landscape-centric urban design practice.
La récente remise des Prix nationaux de design urbain laisse présager une forte présence des architectes paysagistes sur la scène canadienne du design urbain. Il est donc surprenant que le programme de résilience urbaine de la profession demeure confiné aux sphères d’activité traditionnelles, centrées sur la nature, comme la conception d’espaces verts, la conservation des biens naturels ou la foresterie urbaine. Mais est-ce suffisant? La profession ne risque-t-elle pas de se retrouver cantonnée dans un rôle de soutien étroit au sein de l’univers plus large du design urbain ?
Le panel d’expert abordera ces questions du point de vue de trois lauréats des Prix nationaux de design urbain 2020 :

Chaque projet servira à explorer l’interface entre l’architecture de paysage et le design urbain en traitant des préoccupations, des méthodes et des stratégies qui transcendent le cadre disciplinaire. On tentera de délimiter les contours d’une pratique plus large du design urbain centrée sur le paysage.

Jean Trottier
Moderator/modérateur
Jean Trottier is an Associate Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Manitoba, where he teaches graduate and undergraduate urban design courses. He chairs the Editorial Board of Landscapes | Paysages Magazine and is a memberof the Canadian Landscape Architecture Accreditation Council. He serves on the Council for Canadian Urbanism’s Board of Directors and is past Chair of Winnipeg’s Urban Design Advisory Committee. He represented the CSLA in the jurying of the 2020 National Urban Design Awards.
Professeur agrégé au Department of Landscape Architecture de l’Université du Manitoba, Jean Trottier enseigne le design urbain au premier cycle et aux cycles supérieurs. Il préside le Comité de rédaction de la revue Landscapes | Paysages. Il est membre du Conseil canadien d’agrément en architecture de paysage, il siège au conseil d’administration du Conseil canadien d’urbanisme et il a présidé le Comité consultatif en design urbain de Winnipeg. Il a également siégé au jury des Prix nationaux de design urbain 2020 au nom de l’AAPC.
Glen Manning
Glen Manning is the managing principal at HTFC Planning & Design in Winnipeg, entering his 30th year of practice. He is a frequent guest lecturer at the University of Manitoba, and has served on various stewardship-oriented boards, most recently as chair the Province of Manitoba’s Design of Public Spaces Standard Development Committee. His work has garnered several awards, and often involves bridging gaps between engineering, architecture, communities and living systems.
Fort d’une expérience trentenaire, Glen Manning est directeur chez HTFC Planning & Design de Winnipeg. Conférencier fréquent à l’Université du Manitoba, il a siégé à de multiples conseils d’intendance, et plus récemment à titre de président du Design of Public Spaces Standard Development Committee du Manitoba. Lauréat de plusieurs prix, il est souvent appelé à établir le lien entre l’ingénierie, l’architecture, les collectivités et les systèmes vivants.
Yannick Roberge
Yannick Roberge is Studio Director of Design at Claude Cormier et Associés. He is implicated in the conceptual development of projects within the team. His gift for innovation and unique solutions are grounded in rigorous research and insights into the specificities of each project, giving him clarity and confidence to translate the poetics of a design into built form. His multidisciplinary background informs a sensitivity for both the concrete and the intangible that attest to his understanding of humanities and design.
Directeur du studio de design chez Claude Cormier et Associés, Yannick Roberge s’affaire au développement conceptuel des projets au sein de l’équipe. Sa capacité unique en matière d’innovation et de solutions adaptées repose sur une recherche rigoureuse et une compréhension des spécificités de chaque projet, lui conférant la confiance nécessaire pour insuffler la poésie du design dans la forme bâtie. Sa formation pluridisciplinaire lui permet de conjuguer les aspects tangibles et intangibles d’une réalité, témoignant de sa compréhension des sciences humaines et du design.
Peter Soland
Peter Soland is as an architect and landscape architect trained at the University of Montreal and Yale University. He founded his urban design firm in 2001 and launched civiliti in 2015. The firm has been awarded prizes in urban design, landscape architecture, planning and placemaking. Keen observer of urban landscapes, his work is anchored by a poetic approach to the city and is centered on the creation of inclusive urban landscapes that carry the city’s identity into diverse built environments. He is inspired to create contemporary spaces that are seamlessly integrated into their environment, while supporting the creation of new forms and meanings.
Diplômé de l’Université de Montréal et de l’Université Yale en architecture et en architecture de paysage, Peter Soland a fondé son cabinet de design urbain en 2001, puis civiliti en 2015. Son cabinet a reçu de nombreux prix en design urbain, en architecture de paysage, et en planification et aménagement. Observateur attentif des paysages urbains, il privilégie une approche poétique de la ville centrée sur la création de paysages urbains inclusifs qui marque l’identité de la ville au sein de l’espace urbain bâti. Il façonne des espaces contemporains qui s’intègrent parfaitement à leur environnement, en favorisant la création de nouvelles formes significatives.
